The NHL is finally back, as tonight’s games mark the first post-All-Star action of the season. We’ve got a busy schedule ahead tonight as teams around the league get back on the ice, but in the meantime let’s take our daily look at the headlines and see who everyone’s talking about.
The Penguins recalled Andrew Ebbett and a pair of other players from the AHL yesterday as a depth move. They’re scrambling for bodies with both Evgeni Malkin and Sidney Crosby expected to miss Pittsburgh’s first game out of the break.
Toronto’s Dion Phaneuf is reportedly week-to-week due to his upper-body injury. That tag suggests he won’t be back in the immediate future.
With Michal Neuvirth sidelined (he’s dealing with a lower-body injury sustained over the break), the Sabres called up goalie Matt Hackett.
The Islanders got some grim news on winger Kyle Okposo yesterday. He will miss 6-8 weeks with an upper-body injury.
Okposo has 14 scores and 44 points overall this season and his absence will mark a major hit for the Isles.
Back to Buffalo: the Sabres suspended Nikita Zadorov this week. He reportedly failed to report to the team after the All-Star break.
Management says Zadorov will likely rejoin the team at some point during their West road trip this week.
The Flyers’ Steve Mason missed out on practice yesterday due to a lower-body injury. Sources close to the team are calling him day-to-day, so it doesn’t sound like he’ll be out long. Look for him to be back this week at some point.
