NHL News: Player News and Updates for 12/26/14

We’ve still got one more day to wait before the NHL gets going again, as this is the final day of the league’s Christmas break. In the meantime, there’s still a lot to talk about when it comes to injuries and storylines from around the league, so with that in mind let’s check out some of the notable happenings out there right now. Here’s the latest.

The Penguins reassigned a trio of players to the AHL on Wednesday, which is very good news for the team. The move likely signifies that the three players being tested for the mumps (Brandon Sutter, Steve Downie and Thomas Greiss) have tested negative and will be rejoining the team. We’ll find out for sure at practice today.
Sutter, Downie and Greiss have been away from the team for the past two games as a precaution.

In a similarly rosy scenario, the Wild reassigned goalie John Curry to the AHL. He was called up on Tuesday after Niklas Backstrom’s illness diagnosis.
That’s good news for Backstrom’s status, so we expect to hear good things about him today when the team addresses any issues out of the break.

We’ll also find out some more today about Lightning goalie Ben Bishop. He’s been nursing a groin injury but the extra rest through the Christmas break will do him some good.
Sources close to the team are speculating that Bishop could be ready to go by tomorrow at home against Carolina, as he could conceivably have been available for the Tuesday game if the team deemed it necessary.

The Sharks’ John Scott will begin serving his four-game suspension tomorrow and won’t be back until January 5. He got the boot for punching Tim Jackman of the Ducks in the Monday game.
Jackman probably has a concussion, as he left the game and didn’t return. This seems to be par for the course for Scott, however; he’s got a few hits like this on his résumé already.
