NHL News: Player News and Updates for 12/27/14

The NHL will be getting back to business tonight after a three-day Christmas break. We’ve got a lot of action to look forward to out there on the ice, but in the meantime let’s check out some of the notable players and happenings in the headlines right now. Here’s the latest.

Let’s start things out today with a mumps update, shall we? We’ve got a lot of players coming off tests in the past few days, so let’s see how it went.
The Devils’ Martin Havlat was negative, but he’s still dealing with a virus. He’ll be out of action tonight and possibly longer.
Meanwhile, his teammate Patrik Elias’ test came out positive. There’s no word just yet how long he might be out, but he won’t be there tonight against the Rangers.
The Penguins had a trio of players tested this week. Brandon Sutter was the only one to come up negative. We’ll see if he can go tonight when the update comes through after the morning skate.
Not so lucky were Thomas Greiss and Steve Downie, who both came out positive. We’ll have to watch them over the next week or so to see how they’re doing.

The Sabres’ Matt Moulson has been out for the past three games, but word is that he’ll be able to come back to action tonight against the Isles.

Looks like we’ll be getting more of the same out of the Winnipeg net, at least for now. The Jets’ goalie rotation will remain the same moving forward, with Ondrej Pavelec splitting time with Michael Hutchinson.
Many speculated Hutchinson would get more time going forward, as he’s at 8-2-2 on the year with a 1.67 GAA (best in the league). Meanwhile, Pavelec has lost three of his last four. That may happen soon, but not right now.

In other net-minder news, the Isles’ Jaroslav Halak was placed on IR this morning due to his lower-body injury.
The good news here is that the team doesn’t consider this to be a serious condition, so we should see Halak back pretty soon.
