The NHL is going to be pretty quiet tonight, as there are just two games on the schedule. Not to worry, however; the league will be back in business tomorrow. In the meantime, let’s check out some of the notable players and situations around the league.
Michael Del Zotto, D, Philadelphia Flyers: Del Zotto got to play the hero yesterday against the Capitals in the early game, posting the game-winning goal in the third to help the Flyers emerge victorious 3-2. Claude Giroux added a goal and an assist in a nice performance, while Jakub Voracek managed two assists for his part.
Philly has made a blistering comeback to flirt with a playoff spot; they were 13 points out of the final Wild Card spot as recently as January 17.
Patrice Bergeron, C, Boston Bruins: The Bruins stopped a six-game losing streak yesterday at United Center in Chicago, riding a four-goal second period to a 6-2 win over the Blackhawks.
Bergeron managed a goal and two assists, while Dougie Hamilton backed him up on a score and a helper of his own.
Boston is now 29-21-9 while Chicago falls to 35-20-5.
Evgeni Malkin, C, Pittsburgh Penguins: Malkin and Patric Hornqvist both had the same result against the Panthers last night in a 5-1 victory at Consol Energy Center. Each player provided two goals and an assist.
Marc-Andre Fleury was solid in goal with 34 saves on 35 shots. Pittsburgh somehow led 2-0 after two periods after being outplayed in the first and second.
The Pens are now 34-17-9.
Martin St. Louis, RW, New York Rangers: The Rangers were up comfortably on the Blue Jackets last night at the Garden, but let Columbus creep back into the game and force a shootout.
New York lost an early lead but prevailed 4-3 in the shootout, with St. Louis providing a pair of goals. Derek Stepan managed two assists.
The Rangers are 36-16-6 and have picked up at least one point in 11 of 12.
