After a hefty evening of action last night, the NHL is cooling off a bit in the coming hours, with just three games on the schedule. Still, there should be some great hockey out there tonight, so let’s check out some of the notable players in the news this morning.
Joe Thornton, C, San Jose Sharks: Thornton helped lead the charge yesterday in a 4-1 win over the Maple Leafs bagging a pair of assists for his troubles. Logan Couture scored and had an assist of his own, while net-minder Antti Niemi managed 27 saves on 28 shots.
San Jose ended a two-game skid with the win and now stand at 35-28-8. They’re behind the Jets for the second Wild Card slot by six points.
Jamie Benn, LW, Dallas Stars: Benn had a solid game last night against the Penguins. He came up with a goal and an assist in a 2-1 victory. Backing him up was Kari Lehtonen, who managed 31 saves on 32 shots.
It was the fourth straight loss for the Penguins, who are spiraling out at 39-22-10. Meanwhile, the Stars move to 33-28-10 and are 14-14-8 at home.
Marko Dano, C, Columbus Blue Jackets: We don’t get to talk about Dano much, but he had a great game last night against Vancouver. He put up two goals in a 6-2 victory, part of a stretch of six unanswered goals from the Jackets.
Columbus sits at 32-35-4 this season, while Vancouver is 40-26-4 and still in second in the Pacific.
Jarome Iginla, RW, Colorado Avalanche: In a battle of two teams headed in opposite directions, the Avs took care of the Coyotes despite two goals from Oliver Ekman Larsson. Iginla scored in the 5-2 victory, as did Freddie Hamilton.
Colorado has won three in a row and sits at 33-26-11. They’re still seven points behind the Jets, however.
