After a very busy day yesterday, the NHL is slowing things up a bit this afternoon with just four games on the schedule. Still, there’s plenty of good hockey news out there this morning, so let’s take our daily look at the headlines.
Justin Fontaine, RW, Minnesota Wild: The Wild have now beaten the Blues twice in the span of a week. They put up a 6-3 win last night at Xcel Energy Center, thanks to a big effort from Fontaine, who had a goal and two assists. Jonas Brodin also added a goal and a helper himself.
Minnesota moves to 40 wins on the season with this victory (40-25-7), despite getting outshot 29-28.
Radim Vrbata, RW, Vancouver Canucks: Vrbata posted a goal and an assist in a dominant 4-1 win over the Kings last night. Goalie Eddie Lack made 25 saves in the victory, which moved the Canucks to 41-26-4 on the season and gave them a four-point lead on L.A. in the division.
The Kings went down despite 38 saves from goalie Jonathan Quick. They’re now 34-23-14 on the season.
Kari Lentonen, G, Dallas Stars: Lehtonen posted a dazzling performance against the Blackhawks in Dallas last night, logging 33 saves in a 4-0 shutout. It was his fifth of the season.
Helping out on offense were Patrick Eaves (goal; assist) and Alex Goligoski (two assists).
The Stars have won two in a row and now stand at 34-28-10 on the season.
Cam Talbot, G, New York Rangers: Last night’s Rangers-Hurricanes matchup was as tense a game as it promised to be, with the Rangers edging Carolina 3-2 in a shootout at PNC Arena.
Talbot posted 28 saves on 30 shots, and his counterpart Anton Khudobin managed 27 on 29 shots.
The Rangers have earned at least one point in 17 of their past 19. They’re 45-18-7 on the season.
