As we cruise toward the NHL playoffs, our glut of hockey action continues tonight with seven more matchups on the schedule. While we’re waiting on those pucks to drop, let’s check out some of the notable players and situations out there in the headlines.
Vladislav Namestnikov, C, Tampa Bay Lightning: The Lightning have officially clinched a playoff slot, and they’ve got Namestnikov to partially thank. He put up two goals and an assist last night in a 5-3 win over the Canadiens to complete the season sweep. Ondrej Palat added a pair of assists and three shots on goal.
The Lightning are now 47-23-7 on th
e year and 5-0-0 this season against Montreal.
Radim Vrbata, RW, Vancouver Canucks: Vrbata had a nice game last night against the Blues, posting a goal and an assist in the 4-1 victory. Nick Bonino added a goal of his own, and Christopher Tanev managed two assists.
Vancouver is 44-27-5, two points ahead of the Flames for second place in the Pacific.
Richard Bachman, G, Edmonton Oilers: Bachman had another strong game in the net for the Oilers, putting up 29 saves on 30 shots in a 4-1 victory over the Avalanche last night. Brandon Davidson, Justin Schultz, Nikita Nikitin and Taylor Hall each scored for the Oilers.
The Avalanche are fading fast when it comes to playoff berth conversations. They’re 35-29-12 and eight points behind the Jets for the second Wild Card slot in the West. The Avs have six games left.
Andrej Meszaros, D, Buffalo Sabres: Meszaros logged a pair of goals, and Buffalo got a strong performance in the net from Anders Lindback with 28 saves on 29 shots as the Sabres defeated the Coyotes 4-1 last night.
Buffalo, who is 21-47-8 on the year, has just two wins in their last 14 games. The Coyotes sit at 23-46-8 and are 0-7-1 in their past eight games.
