The Coyotes look to rebound after a shootout loss in Toronto on Thursday as they head to Ottawa to take on the Senators.
Phoenix doesn’t spend a lot of time on the East coast so when they do venture to other part of the land it is a nice opportunity for some of the players to play closer to home as was the case in Toronto on Thursday and this afternoon in Ottawa. The Coyotes played a stingy defensive game but couldn’t solve Leafs goalie James Reimer aside from a late game-tying marker that secured a single point via a shootout loss and they know they’ll have to play better today. The Coyotes are quietly putting together a pretty strong season as they are 18-10-6 and right in the mix in the Western Conference playoff picture but with the way their division rivals are playing at the moment the Coyotes know they have to turn on the gas a little bit more. Mike Smith should get the call for Phoenix while the home town Sens counter with Craig Anderson.
Ottawa continues to struggle as they have lost back to back contests and 6 of their last 10 overall which has dropped them into sixth place in the Atlantic division leading only the Panthers and Sabres. The Sens have been a disappointment all season and I don’t expect much from them this year as I think they’re still rallying around the loss of long time captain Daniel Alfredsson and with the Swedish national enjoying success in Detroit it must be painful for Sens fans to stomach. Ottawa has struggled mightily at home this season as they’re just 7-10-3 at the Canadian Tire Centre and if they want to make a push at one of the final playoff spots they need to rectify their home ice woes. However, I don’t think this is the spot to do it as I think the Coyotes will be geared up after their loss to the Leafs in what was an ugly effort on their part and getting back to back poor outings from a team like Phoenix doesn’t happen very often. I am on the visitors here.
