The Pittsburgh Penguins and the Philadelphia Flyers meet in NHL action in a Battle of Pennsylvania from the Wells Fargo Center on Monday night.
The Pittsburgh Penguins will look to rebound from a 4-game losing streak after a 5-4 loss to Tampa Bay in their last outing. Garrett Wilson opened the scoring for the Pens, but Tampa Bay would tie and take the lead in a span of :57 just a minute and a half later to take a 2-1 lead into the 2nd period. Tampa went 3-1 up before Jared McCann and Bryan Rust tied the game for Pittsburgh at 3-3 heading into the 3rd period. Tampa pushed ahead 5-3 before Tanner Pearson pulled a goal back to make it 5-4, but that’s as close as the Penguins would get as the Bolts would hold on the rest of the way. Casey DeSmith took the loss, falling to 13-10-5 after allowing all 5 goals on 34 shots faced in the losing effort.
The Philadelphia Flyers will look to stay hot after recording a point in 10 straight games following a 6-2 win over Anaheim in their last outing. Phil Varone opened the scoring 2:44 into the game before Sean Couturier and Michael Raffl scored 1:20 apart to make it 3-0 and Oskar Lindblom made it 4-0 after the opening 20 minutes of play. Anaheim pulled one back with the lone goal of the 2nd and cut the deficit to 4-2, but that’s as close as the Ducks got as Nolan Patrick and Travis Konecny restored the four-goal cushion and held on for the W. Carter Hart got the win to improve to 11-5-1 this season after stopping 30 of the 32 shots faced in the winning effort.
Pittsburgh is 0-4 in their last 4 games overall and 0-4 in their last 4 road games while the under is 8-3-2 in their last 13 division games. Philadelphia is 9-1 in their last 10 games overall and 7-1 in their last 8 home games while the under is 5-1 in their last 6 games following a win. Pittsburgh is 8-3 in the last 11 meetings between these two teams and 5-0 in the last 5 meetings between these two teams in Philadelphia.
The Penguins are too talented of a team to keep losing like this and are probably due and what better place to turn their fortunes than in Philadelphia where the Pens have had success and the road team has had all of the success in recent meetings. However, Philadelphia has been red hot and sometimes regardless of trends, you have to ride the hot hand until it stops paying off. It also doesn’t hurt that we’re getting even money with the Flyers at home, so I’ll take a shot with Philadelphia as a solid value play in this one.
