The Calgary Flames continues their Pacific coast road trip as they leave Los Angeles and head to Phoenix to take on the Coyotes.
The Flames are in the midst of a massive overhaul as they lost two cornerstones to their franchise last season and with new management coming in it is clear they are building for the future. However, the Flames have actually shown a lot of bite in the early going this season as they have competed with some of the game’s best teams and have pulled off some impressive victories along the way. They played the Los Angeles Kings very tight last night and the time of writing they are tied at two at the end of the second period which could put them in good shape for a big win on the road. Regardless of the outcome the Flames need to shift their focus to the Coyotes who are a different team than the Kings as Phoenix doesn’t have as much star power but a lot of role playing grit instead. Joey Macdonald will get the start for Calgary against Mike Smith of the Coyotes.
Phoenix is off to a nice start sitting at 5-2-2 on the year and is coming off an impressive win at home over the Detroit Red Wings which featured a buzzer beating end-to-end goal from Coyotes’ goaltender Mike Smith. Phoenix will look for their second consecutive victory and sixth on the season in this one as they continue to prove they’re a very solid bet at home as they’re 2-0-1 in Arizona this year and host a Flames team coming off a tough stretch against the Sharks and Kings. While the odds aren’t in Phoenix’s favour in terms of a money line play and the puck line does scare me a little I think it is the only route to go here as the Coyotes are better team and are playing at home.
