The Stars wrap up their regular season before heading to the playoffs in the desert against the team they eliminated from playoff contention.
It has been a painful stretch of futility in Dallas but playoff hockey is back for Stars fans who have long awaited the franchise’s return to hockey’s second season. Dallas was a perennial playoff team in the late 90’s and early to mid 2000’s but haven’t made the postseason since 2008 and weren’t expected to again this year but have found a way in and have locked up the eighth seed in the West. A large part of the team’s success stems from the chemistry built by Tyler Seguin and Jamie Benn in what is one of the more lethal tandems in the game and if the Stars are going to pull off a first round upset those two guys are going to have to be on par. Dallas heads into Phoenix looking to close out the regular season in style but know it’ll be a tough go as the Coyotes are surely upset with Dallas as they officially eliminated them earlier this week.
Phoenix was a long shot in my estimation to make the playoffs and even more so to win a series if they got there and their glimmer of hope was shattered by a Dallas victory over Blues this week that sent the Stars fans into frenzy. The Coyotes aren’t a bad team but with the amount of talent in the West it was hard to fathom them as a playoff team but they could bounce back just as easily next year especially if Mike Smith fully recovers from injury. While Phoenix may be wrapping up at the end of this one I think they give the Stars more than a fight here and while Dallas is heading to either Anaheim or St. Louis next week I think Phoenix gets the win here and ends the season on a positive note.
