Everything has been going right for the Philadelphia Flyers since their atrocious start to the season. Now on their second coach of the year the Flyers have found their game again and they're playing defense on top of it. Steve Mason has been great for them in goal and this team is playing with a ton of confidence and has made up all the ground in the Metropolitan Division. Their four game winning streak was snapped the other night in Colorado but this team is still playing good hockey. Mason turned in another strong performance making 29 saves but he didn't get enough suport in this one as Wayne Simmonds scored the only goal of the game for Philadelphia. The Flyers were 0-for-3 with the man advantage in this one and they couldn't overcome it because Semyon Varlamov had their number all night. Despite not scoring on the power play the Flyers fired nine shots at Varlamov during their three opportunities but couldn't find the back of the net. Philadelphia will have another stiff test on Saturday with Mike Smith likely getting the nod for the Coyotes.
It hasn't been great for the Phoenix Coyotes lately and they now find themselves in fifth place in the Pacific Division. The good news is that the Los Angeles Kings have been struggling so they're only five points out of third. Phoenix was struggling to score goals for a while and then they seemed to be forcing things for a while trying to generate things. The offense got better for the Coyotes but it was at the expense of the defense and so the vicious cycle continues in Phoenix. Thursday night it was back to not generating anything and the Coyotes suffered a 2-0 defeat in front of their home crowd to the Columbus Blue Jackets. The Coyotes had 21 shots in the third period but it was too little too late for a club that generated just 13 through the first two periods. The Coyotes are favored in this one but with the way these teams are playing it's hard not to like the Flyers are plus money here on Saturday.
