The Sharks look to close out the regular season with a victory as they head into the desert to take on the Phoenix Coyotes.
San Jose was in the midst of a funk in the final stretch of the regular season but they broke out of that in a big way last night as they walked all over the Colorado Avalanche and handed them a 5-1 drubbing. While San Jose can`t improve their standing in the Western Conference and they`re slated in to a first round matchup with the Los Angeles Kings they would still like to generate momentum heading into next week`s opening round and a win on the road against a deflated Coyotes team looks like the spot for them to do so. San Jose will be playing against former goaltender Thomas Greiss who has come into his own as the emergency starter for the Coyotes and while sometimes it is a benefit for a former goalie to see his old club I think this situation is a dire one for Greiss as the Sharks players know him all too well.
The Coyotes were officially eliminated from playoff contention without even stepping onto the ice last night as the Dallas Stars upended the St. Louis Blues to the tune of a 3-0 victory that cemented Dallas into the final spot and ending Phoenix`s porous attempt at sneaking in. Phoenix was in decent shape even after Mike Smith went down with an injury but the wheels quickly fell off from there and to be honest I don`t think the Coyotes are a playoff worthy team especially in the Western Conference and with a healthy Mike Smith. While it would be nice for the Coyotes to close out the year with a win and with this game not really mattering too much to the Sharks I just don`t see this as being a good spot for Phoenix as they are surely emotionally drained from being officially eliminated and that has to be tough on a team in their first game after that realization, especially this late in the year. San Jose cruises.
