The Red Wings look to lock up a playoff spot as they head to Pittsburgh on Wednesday to take on the Penguins.
The Detroit Red Wings took care of business against the Buffalo Sabres last night giving them 90 points on the year and with Toronto’s loss to the Lightning that officially eliminated the Buds things are looking more and more promising for Detroit. The Wings currently hold down the seventh seed in the East and are in a good position to keep their 22-year playoff streak intact with just three games remaining and the New Jersey Devils sitting six points behind. The Red Wings will be a little drained heading into Pittsburgh as they played last night but with the chance to clinch a spot with a victory or overtime loss the Wings know it is do or die and once they escape this game they can rest up for a postseason push. Jimmy Howard should get the call in goal for the Wings as he will go up against Marc-Andre Fleury.
The Penguins have just five victories in their last 10 contests and their mediocrity since returning from Sochi has essentially given the Boston Bruins the top seed in the Eastern Conference which they wrapped up earlier this week. Pittsburgh is still a very dangerous team and they have locked in the second overall seed in the Conference which will give them a first round matchup with one of the wild card teams and in all likelihood will be the Red Wings. Pittsburgh and Detroit have a rich history together of late as they met in back to back Stanley Cup finals with each team winning one and the possibility of having these two renew hostilities in the East has hockey fans drooling. While Pittsburgh needs to turn things up and gain some momentum heading into the playoffs I think the Wings will be playing some desperate hockey here and will do their best to at least earn a point.
