The Islanders look to continue their impressive stretch and close the gap on the Capitals for top spot in the Metro as they head into Pittsburgh to battle the Pens.
The Islanders head into Pittsburgh on Saturday night looking to win their third game in a row and seventh in their last 10 overall as Thomas Greiss continues to anchor the New York crease with Jaroslav Halak battling injury. The Isles have been pretty consistent this season but their recent surge combined with the Rangers hitting a bit of a speed bump has them sitting in second place in the division and while they have a ton of work left to do to chase down the Capitals they are in a good spot in terms of playoff positioning as the season’s mid way point fast approaches.
The Penguins meanwhile have had a tough time this season and have been one of the league’s biggest underachievers as they head into tonight’s game sitting in fifth in the Metro division with an 18-15-4 record. Pittsburgh was expected to be the class of the Eastern Conference after they brought in Phil Kessel in the off season but so far it has fabricated as expected and while there is a ton of time left to figure it out it is hard to imagine a huge turnaround at this juncture. The Pens are 9-7-3 at home this season while the Isles are 9-6-3 on the road and in a game where we could see the return of Marc-Andre Fleury from the inured reserve I think the visitors come out with a big time effort and get the victory.
