The New York Rangers and Pittsburgh Penguins meet Sunday in NHL action at the PPG Paints Arena.
The New York Rangers could use a big road win after splitting their last 10 games. The New York Rangers are averaging 2.8 goals per game and are scoring on 21.4 percent of their power play opportunities. Mika Zibanejad leads New York with 25 goals, Kevin Hayes has 27 assists and Chris Kreider has 154 shots on goal. Defensively, the New York Rangers are allowing 3.3 goals per game and are killing 77.5 percent of their opponents power plays. Henrik Lundqvist has given up 119 goals on 1,277 shots faced and Alexandar Georgiev has allowed 55 goals on 593 shots. The New York Rangers have allowed three or less goals in 10 of their last 12 games.
The Pittsburgh Penguins could use a win after losing five of their last seven games. The Pittsburgh Penguins are averaging 3.4 goals per game and are scoring on 23.2 percent of their power play opportunities. Jake Guentzel leads Pittsburgh with 27 goals, Sidney Crosby has 42 assists and Kris Letang has 172 shots on goal. Defensively, the Pittsburgh Penguins are allowing three goals per game and are killing 82.2 percent of their opponents power plays. Matt Murray has given up 75 goals on 896 shots faced and Casey DeSmith has allowed 79 goals on 937 shots. The Pittsburgh Penguins have allowed three or more goals in eight of their last 11 games.
The Rangers are 16-36 in their last 52 road games, 16-37 in their last 53 games as a road underdog and 3-13 in their last 16 Sunday games. The Penguins are 24-9 in their last 33 Sunday games, 114-48 in their last 162 home games and 108-46 in their last 154 games as a home favorite. The over is 4-1 in Rangers last 5 road games. The under is 5-1 in Penguins last 6 overall. The Rangers are 5-13 in the last 18 meetings and the favorite is 6-2 in the last 8 meetings.
The Pittsburgh Penguins aren't playing well enough this week to lay this sort of juice, even if they've beat up on the New York Rangers the past several years and are catching them struggling at the moment. I can't take the Ranges on the road for obvious reasons, but this line is too thick to back the Penguins on the ML. So, I'll take the Penguins and the PL, as they beat the Rangers by five goals last month and four of their last six wins over the Rangers haven't been close. This gives us some sort of value in this contest.
