The Capitals and Penguins meet up in Pittsburgh on Sunday in a battle of arch rivals who could meet in the first round of the playoffs.
The Washington Capitals punched their ticket to the NHL playoffs it seems like ages ago and while they try to stay sharp and focused for the real season to begin they face off against teams playing desperate hockey and will be in a win by any means type of mentality. The Capitals head into Sunday’s game in Pittsburgh facing such a task as the Pens sit in third place in the Metro division but are just a single point up on the Islanders in a race that will come down to the wire and after a big time victory against their cross state rivals yesterday they will be fired up to go again today. The Capitals head in sitting atop the NHL standings with 107 points and are 12 points clear in the President’s Trophy race, and with just 12 games left on their schedule they can pretty well plan the parade for claiming the league’s top regular season record.
The Penguins have really turned it up since the all-star break and Sidney Crosby has regained his old form in the process and they could be a very dangerous team in the playoffs as they have underachieved a little bit and haven’t gotten the production they anticipated out of Phil Kessel. Pittsburgh still has some holes on the blue line and you never know which Marc-Andre Fluery is going to show up come playoff time but if they face off against the Caps in the first round they may be the only team to match up with them shift for shift in terms of intensity and skill. This is going to be a good one but with the Pens playing in a back to back and getting a huge win yesterday against the Flyers I think they will be a little bit drained here and against the Caps that is something you can’t have.
