The Capitals look to extend their playoff season with another do or die scenario on Tuesday while the Pens can advance to the Eastern Conference final with a victory.
The Capitals defending home ice and kept their Cup aspirations alive for at least one more game as they took down the Pens by a 3-1 final on Saturday night but now have to play in Pittsburgh in a game where the Pens realize it could be their game seven as a deciding show down in Washington isn’t something they want to see. The Caps were the league’s best team all season and were given the benefit of the doubt heading into these playoffs despite their history of playoff futility but in a spot now where they have to win three games in a row against a quality Penguins side it could be déjà vu all over again as Washington is a single loss away from what could be a very long and frustrating offseason.
The Penguins meanwhile couldn’t send the Caps packing in game five on Saturday night but have the home crowd on their side in this one and will be fired up with the idea of possibly sending their arch rivals home prematurely once again. Sidney Crosby has been excellent in these playoffs and will continue to lead the Pens in the offensive zone but the story line surrounding the goaltending situation is interesting as they have ridden Matt Murray to this point but Marc-Andre Fleury appears to be healthy and could very well get the nod if the Pens need a spark at home. This should be a great game and while the Caps have been the league’s best this season, they fall short once again and see their season come to an end.
