After six consecutive victories to start the season the San Jose Sharks finally suffered their first defeat of the season with a 4-3 loss to the Dallas Stars on Thursday night. Still, they managed to pick up another point and are currently +20 in goal differential through their first 20 games. The odds of that continuing are slim to none but this is a team that's going to be at the top of the standings in the Pacific Division the rest of the way. All the talent is there but what the Sharks need to spend this season doing is developing a playoff identity. This team needs to play these games during the regular season like they're playoff games. While most teams might shy away from this mentality because of the chances it wears you down, the Sharks have no choice. Too many years have they been elite in the regular season only to flame out in the post season. They've got to prepare for April even while still in October. A good way to do that will be to beat up on the Calgary Flames. This young hockey club has shown some jump and some life and they've been a lot of fun to watch. They're walking into a tough environment on Saturday night and they should be looking to prove something. We'll see which club has more bite in this one.
