The Flames continue their pursuit of a playoff spot with a road trip to San Jose on Monday while the Sharks look to keep the Flames at bay in the division standings.
The Flames have been one of the league's biggest surprises this season and they can cap their magical run off with a playoff berth that would send the whole league shockwaves based on preseason expectations. Calgary is a young team with enough balance of veteran leadership to build a successful team and while their success isn't out of the blue it is unexpected to see them doing so well this early in their rebuild and they are the model of what it takes to bring pieces together to add to existing young talent. Calgary currently sits in a playoff spot in the West holding on to the second wild card spot and while that would likely mean a match up in the first round with the Nashville Predators or Anaheim Ducks the Flames would gladly take that over missing out altogether and landing another top draft pick. Jonas Hiller gets the call as he will go up against Antii Niemi.
The Sharks hold down second spot in the Pacific at the moment and will look to maintain that seeding heading into the playoffs as a division title is a pipe dream that was basically squashed a month ago based on how well the Anaheim Ducks have played this season. San Jose has played with a purpose this year after losing in spectacular fashion in the first round against the LA Kings last season and while they may not get their revenge on LA in the postseason due to the Kings' subpar effort the Sharks have a chance to finally break through and win the seemingly unattainable Cup this franchise has starved for for the last 10+ seasons. San Jose are slight favourited at home and while Calgary has been a nice story I think the home side shows them a thing or two with a win.
