The Pittsburgh Penguins and the San Jose Sharks meet in NHL action from the SAP Center at San Jose on Tuesday night.
The Pittsburgh Penguins come into this game looking to stay hot after winning 12 of their last 15 games but took a step back with a 5-2 loss to Los Angeles in their last outing. Jake Guentzel opened the scoring for the Pens just 5:30 into the game before the Kings tied the game up by the end of the opening period. L.A. scored twice in the 2nd to take a 3-1 lead into the final period before pushing the lead to 4-1. Guentzel scored his 2nd of the game to make it 4-2, but that’s as close as the Pens got as the Kings chipped in an empty netter to send the Penguins back empty-handed. Casey DeSmith took the loss, falling to 12-8-4 after allowing 4 goals on 24 shots in the losing effort.
The San Jose Sharks will look to stay hot after winning 6 in a row with a 4-1 win over San Jose in their last outing. The game was scoreless through the opening period and for most of the 2nd before Joe Pavelski gave the Sharks the lead with the lone goal of the middle frame with just over two minutes to go in the period. Brent Burns doubled the lead early in the 3rd, but it lasted all of :27 before Ottawa cut the deficit back to 2-1. Joe Thornton restored the two-goal cushion before Melker Karlsson iced the win with an empty net goal late in the 3rd. Martin Jones got the win to improve to 21-8-4 this season after stopping 27 of 28 shots faced in the winning effort.
Pittsburgh is 10-2 in their last 12 games overall and 6-1 in their last 7 road games while the over is 3-0-1 in their last 4 games against the Pacific division. San Jose is 6-0 in their last 6 games overall and 5-0 in their last 5 home games while the over is 4-1-1 in their last 6 games against a team with a winning record. The under is 7-2-1 in the last 10 meetings between these two teams and 4-0-1 in the last 5 meetings between these two teams in San Jose.
This game could genuinely go either way, as you have the Sharks who are red-hot going against an equally hot team in Pittsburgh. I’m tempted to go with the Penguins given the plus money, but a loss to the Kings doesn’t do much for confidence for me, while I don’t want to pay this kind of juice with San Jose as Pittsburgh can go off at any time. Instead, I’m going to side with the under. It’s been a common trend when these two meet, and the last 5 meetings between these two teams in San Jose have each seen 5 goals or less.
