The Sharks look to end a two game slide with a win in a pivotal match up against the Capitals on Wednesday while the road team will look to jump back in the fold in the Metro division.
The Washington Capitals have stumbled out of the gates since the all-star break and have lost a little bit of ground in the division but to their delight the Penguins and Islanders have struggled as well and they are very much still in the mix not only for a playoff spot but to win the division title. The Caps sit in fourth place in the division but there is only six points separating the first place Islanders from Washington making it a very tight race and it'll likely come down to the wire between the four squads as they will jockey for playoff positioning. The Caps are led up front of course by Alex Ovechkina nd Nick Backstrom but they have had a strong identity on defense this season with Barry Trotz at the helm and with the free agent pillage from the Pens bringing Niskanen and Orpik over this team is a lot more balanced defensively. Braden Holtby will get the nod as he will go up against Antii Niemi.
The Sharks as always continue to be one of the streakiest teams in the league as they will go on winning streaks of six or seven and then drop three or four in a row leaving them susceptible to falling out of the playoff race if they start losing at the wrong time. San Jose is a very good team especially on home ice but they have been dead even away and home this season sporting a 14-10-3 in San Jose and on the road which draws a little bit of concern as they haven't demonstrated on a consistent basis they can win in either spot and come playoff time that mentality can be huge. San Jose is getting older and rely a lot on Patrick Marleau and Joe Thornton still and while Joe Pavelski and Logan Couture will continue their take over I am not sure that dynamic is there yet and until it does I will always be a little weary with this group. I am on the road team here as I think Holtby is one of the best goalies in the league and he can steal this one by himself.
