The Washington Capitals look to end their four game road losing streak as they head into San Jose to face off with the Sharks on Saturday.
The Capitals have hit a bit of a speed bump in their pursuit for top spot in the Metro division as they have dropped five of their last six games against Pacific division foes and are coming off a disappointing loss to the Anaheim Ducks, but they have been strong on Saturday’s this season. Washington continues to be a polarizing team that looks like a Cup contender one night and then a basement dweller the next but overall they are still a team to watch out for the Eastern Conference and perhaps the season they finally break through and appear in the Stanley Cup final is the season that nobody expects them to do so. The Caps are likely to turn to Phillipp Grubauer here as he will face off against Martin Jones who looked very good in San Jose’s victory over the Blues on Thursday night.
The Sharks meanwhile have quietly pieced together a strong season in the Pacific division and with all of the hype surrounding the Knights atop the division it could be San Jose who flies under the radar and makes a move in the Western Conference playoffs. San Jose has gone 5-1 in their last six home games and are a perfect 5-0 in their last five Saturday games and with a staggering 22-4 record in their last 26 matchups with the Capitals it looks like another great spot for San Jose to make a statement. San Jose made the move to acquire Evander Kane to shore up their offense and come playoff time I think the Sharks will be a tough out and with a win at home here they can continue to improve their seed in the competitive Western Conference.
The Caps are 9-2 in their last 11 Saturday games and 1-5 in their last six against the West while the Sharks are 5-1 in their last six home games against a team with a losing road record and have played to the over in four of their last five home games. The Caps need to get a win here but they are terrible against San Jose and I like that trend to continue.
