The Winnipeg Jets and San Jose Sharks play Saturday night at the SAP Center.
The Winnipeg Jets are coming off a 6-2 blowout victory over the Arizona Coyotes, a game in which they pretty much put the game away with four goals in the first period. It was an offensive explosion for Winnipeg, especially Blake Wheeler and Bryan Little who combined for four of the six goals. Dustin Byfuglien also scored and led the Jets with four shots on goal. Goalie Ondrej Pavelec blocked 26 of 28 shot attempts and looked like a completely different goalie than he was towards the end of last season. While scoring wasn’t exactly Winnipeg’s strong suite last season, it was won six of its last seven games when scoring three or more goals. The Winnipeg Jets look to begin the season 2-0 for the second consecutive year.
The San Jose Sharks got their revenge on the Los Angeles Kings by dominating them on the road with a 4-0 victory to spoil their celebration. The Sharks were nearly flawless throughout the game, winning 42 faceoffs, getting 30 shots on goal and playing terrific defense. Speaking of great defense, Antti Niemi blocked all 34 shots and gave the Kings their first regular season shutout since February 1. Niemi has now won six of his last 10 games. Offensively, Tommy Wingels led the way with two goals and Brent Burns had two assists. Joe Pavelski led the Sharks with seven shots on goal. Overall, it was a solid performance from the San Jose Sharks, a team that likely had that game circled on their calendar since the crushing loss in the postseason.
The Jets are 4-0 in their last 4 road games and 1-5 in their last 6 games playing on 1 days rest. The Sharks are 7-0 in their last 7 games playing on 2 days rest and 1-4 in their last 5 vs. Western Conference. The Jets are 2-6-1 in the last 9 meetings in San Jose.
We may see a bit of a letwdown here from the San Jose Sharks, as they put a ton of focus and energy in their season opener. I like the Jets in an upset, especially with this value.
