It appeared that New York Islanders head coach Jack Capuano was grasping at straws after Tuesday night's loss, sounding like a man despearate to keep his job. At this point the only thing that might be saving Capuano is the fact that general manager Garth Snow doesn't want the pressure on himself for this mess that the Islanders are in. The losses just continue to pile up for New York and now all they're left to hold their hats on is the fact that this hockey club doesn't give up and works hard every night. On Tuesday they certainly played hard, jumping out to a 2-0 lead over the Pittsburgh Penguins on goals by Kyle Okposo. As the game went on however the Penguins asserted themselves, getting the tying and winning goals from Sidney Crosby as the Penguins rallied to defeat the Islanders 3-2 in overtime. In professional sports the notion of working hard isn't enough and sooner rather than later the Islanders are going to have to find a way to win some games or people are going to lose their jobs. Unfortunately heading to St. Louis to take on the 18-5-3 Blues. Add in the fact that the blues have lost two consecutive games and this shapes up as an almost impossible game for the Islanders on Thursday night. After a 6-3 loss to the San Jose Sharks the Blues fell 3-2 to the Los Angeles Kings on Monday night. St. Louis got off to a slow start, allowing two goals in the first period on 13 shots. While that's not the end of the world it's still something that isn't the norm for a Blues club that allows very few shots on goal almost every game. Kevin Shattenkirk and Vladimir Tarasenko scored goasl in the third period but it wasn't enough to save Jaroslav Halak from his sixth loss of the season. This one shapes up to be one of those games where the Islanders give us another solid effort beore realizing that they're outmatched by St. Louis. If the Blues play their game they should be able to win this one by a couple of goals.
