The Buffalo Sabres look to snap out of their ugly losing skid against divisional opponents as they head into Tampa Bay to face off against the Lightning on Friday night.
The Sabres have had a season to forget and things don’t get any easier for them down the stretch as they face off against one of the league’s best teams on the road on Friday night in their penultimate game of the season. Buffalo does have some nice young pieces that will anchor the core of their team for years to come and with this dismal season leaving them in the mix for top spot in the upcoming raft with prized coveted prospect Rasmus Dahlin waiting to be taken it could very well be a blessing in disguise for the Sabres who has a great chance to land a cornerstone, franchise changing blue liner. Buffalo is a huge underdog in this spot as they are 3-12 in their last 15 meetings with the Bolts and are a measly 2-6 in their last eight trips into Tampa Bay which doesn’t bode well for them here in a game that the Lightning need to win.
Tampa Bay is coming off their biggest victory of the season as they netted a 4-0 shutout win in Boston against the Bruins which pulled them into a tie with their Atlantic division rivals and setting up a potential winner take all affair in Tampa on Saturday. The Bolts had been the class of the Eastern Conference this season but a second half swoon and a late season surge from the B’s has the Atlantic coming down to the wire with the last game of the season determining home ice for potentially the first two rounds of the playoffs. Tampa and Buffalo has played to the under in nine of their last 12 meetings in Tampa Bay and with Buffalo’s struggles being well documented this could very well follow the same trend.
The Sabres are 3-12 in their last 15 playing on one day’s rest and 17-39 in their last 56 against the East while the Bolts are 12-5 in their last 17 against the East and 9-4 in their last 13 following a win. Buffalo is a huge underdog here but for good cause as Tampa needs a win and is very tough to beat on home ice.
