The Red Wings look to close the gap on the Atlantic division lead and overtake the Bolts for second with a win in Tampa tonight.
The Detroit Red Wings head into Tampa Bay on Wednesday night to kick off the second half of their regular season schedule and right out of the gate they get a division rivals whom they’re competing with for a playoff spot. The Wings have actually played above where most people expected to find them this season, especially after losing head coach Mike Babcock, but they are a very solid group that should continue their own playoff streak. The Wings will go with Petr Mrazek here who has unseated Jimmy Howard as the team’s starter and he will go up against Ben Bishop in a battle of two very good goaltenders. The Wings are 14-6-3 on the road this season while the Lightning are 15-8-2 at home.
The Lightning head into tonight’s game sitting in second place in the Atlantic division and trail their in state rivals by seven points with a game in hand in a challenge that is certainly well within their reach heading down the stretch. The tough part for the Bolts though is what they will end up doing with Jonathan Drouin and Steven Stamkos as the trade deadline appears and while there are monumental differences between the two in terms of their meaning to the team and what they would field in a trade but both have been involved in trade speculation throughout the season with the former basically sitting out until he gets dealt. As for tonight, I look for this one to be a battle as both teams are jockeying for playoff positioning and they each have a world class goaltender. Take the under.
