The Arizona Coyotes look to improve their ugly road losing ways as they head into the Air Canada Centre on Thursday night for a battle with the Toronto Maple Leafs.
The Coyotes have had a rough go away from home this season as they have but four victories on the road so far this season and as losers of seven of their last 10 games they know they need to right the ship in a hurry if they’re going to be competitive in the Western Conference this season. The Coyotes have some budding young talent and are held together by a string of veterans led by the ageless Shane Doan but top to bottom they have some holes and need to do a better job of stringing victories together as they have been inconsistent and play in a tough Pacific division. Mike Smith will likely get the call here as he is expected to face off against Frederik Andersen who is settling in nicely as the starting goaltender for the Maple Leafs after coming over from the Anaheim Ducks.
The Maple Leafs have been an interesting team to watch so far this season as they seem to elevate their game against the league’s best and fall flat in games they should win and as such they have been tough to handicap and this spot is no different. Toronto is 11-11-2 so far this season and are 8-5 at home but again they seem to find ways to compete with some of the upper echelon teams and give us some great value in those spots when they hit but as a heavy favourite at home against a borderline desperate team is not an enticing play and is one I will likely stay away from.
The Coyotes are 1-4 in their last five against the Atlantic and 2-7 in their last nine overall while the Leafs are 4-1 in their last five Thursday games and 1-4 in their last five home games. Arizona and Toronto are a lot closer than this line indicates so I am staying clear of the line but with the fire power in this game I think the over is the play.
