The Dallas Stars collide with the Vancouver Canucks in Monday NHL action.
The Dallas Stars play their third straight road game with a stop at the Vancouver Canucks Monday. Dallas had dropped back to back contests before leaning on their defense to squeeze by the Calgary Flames 2-1 on Friday night.
This was a defensive struggle all the way with a scoreless opening period before the Flames opened the scoring midway through the second period on a Johnny Gaudreau tally with assists from Michael Ferland and Sean Monahan. Esa Lindall evened the score with a power play tally at 16:54 while Alexander Radulov scored the winner at 12:50 of the third also on the PP.
Kari Lehtonen picked up the win for the Stars with a 27 save performance to outduel the Flames Mike Smith who was solid in defeat with both goals given up on 24 shots.
The surging Vancouver Canucks look to stay hot when the Dallas Stars visit on Monday. Vancouver has been playing their best hockey with four consecutive victories after a 6-2 rout of the visiting Washington Capitals on Thursday.
The Canucks were a non factor a season ago but have been doing their part to change things so far in 2017-18. The Vancouver attack was led by Sven Baertschi who scored twice with the man advantage. The Canucks also received scoring from Derek Dorsett, Bo Horvat, Thomas Vanek and Markus Granlund with Brock Boeser added three helpers.
Washington saw goals come from Chandler Stephenson and Evgeny Kuznetsov but that wasn’t enough with struggling goal tending. Capitals starter Braden Holtby allowed five goals on 22 shots before Phillipp Grubauer came in and stopped 7-8 shots. Anders Nilsson picked up the win with 25 saves for Vancouver.
Stars are 0-4 in their last 4 when their opponent scores 5 goals or more in their previous game and Stars are 4-1 in their last 5 road games vs. a team with a losing home record and over is 4-1 in Stars last 5 when their opponent allows 2 goals or less in their previous game. Canucks are 0-4 in their last 4 home games vs. a team with a road winning % of less than .400 and over is 5-1-2 in Canucks last 8 Monday games and under is 5-1-2 in Canucks last 8 vs. a team with a winning record. Stars are 6-1 in the last 7 meetings in Vancouver and Stars are 13-3 in the last 16 meetings and over is 15-5-1 in the last 21 meetings in Vancouver.
I think Dallas might be the better squad but Vancouver is playing well right now. I will go with the over and look for goalie pairings…
