The Rangers look to avoid a let down in game one of the Metro division finals as they welcome the Capitals to MSG on Thursday night.
The Washington Capitals survived the opening round thanks to a game seven victory on home ice and now they'll look to do the same against the other New York team as they shift their focus to the Rangers. The Caps didn't have the greatest series overall but the Islanders are a good team and going to seven is no slight on them but if they're going to contend with the Blue Shirts they'll need to find a way to generate more offense as New York has a ridiculous blue line and one of the best goalies in the NHL. The Caps have Braden Holtby to counteract Henrik Lundqvist and while Holtby was one of the most underrated players in the league this season he has allowed some softies in these playoffs and against an elite team like New York he will have to be sharper or this could be a quick series.
The Rangers meanwhile may need a bit of time to get their legs back after a prolonged wait as a result of ridding of the Penguins in timely fashion but they know how the Caps play as the teams have faced off on numerous occasions over the last few years. New York had a tougher series than people expected as Pittsburgh was very capable of winning each of the games they lost in their opening round series but in the end the Rangers did enough to secure the series win and a 4-1 finish is a comfortable margin for any team. This is going to be another spectacular series between two bitter rivals and while the value in this series is going to rest on the dog each and every time I think New York draws first blood and take the series opener at home.
