Two teams heading in opposite directions square off in DC on Sunday as the Bruins and Capitals battle for positioning in the Eastern Conference.
The Bruins are one of the hottest teams in the league and are coming off their fifth straight victory against the Penguins yesterday and have distanced themselves from the Senators and Panthers in the chase for the final playoff spots. Boston hasn't had the season many expected as they have become a league power over the years but they are well out of the race in the Atlantic division and will likely end up as a wild card entry at best but that suits them just fine as they are a contending team trapped in a pretender's body at the moment and if they can break out they will be very tough to beat in a seven game set. However, they are playing in a back to back here against a Caps team that has dropped two straight and needs a win badly to regain some focus down the stretch.
The Capitals looked as though they were going to be a shoe in for playoff hockey back in December but a less than desirable second half has them competing for a wild card spot and they can feel the heat coming in as the days pass. Washington is a team I think should be represented in the playoffs as one of the best eight teams in the East as they have a great attack and goaltending and a respectable blue line and perhaps their most impressive stat is their goal differential which sits third best in the Eastern Conference behind the Rangers and Lightning and could carry them into hockey's second season. This will be a great game between two teams itching for the playoffs and while the B's have been the better team I have to side with Washington here as both trends snap and the Caps get a much needed victory.
