Friday NHL action pits the Calgary Flames against the Washington Capitals.
The Calgary Flames finished the first half of the year with wins in eight of nine capped off by a 3-2 OT victory against visiting Carolina. Dougie Hamilton and Sebastian Aho tallied for Carolina and Petr Mrazek gave up three goals on 25 shots.
Calgary took a 1-0 lead in the first on a Oliver Kylington goal while Mark Jankowski lit the lamp in the second for a 2-1 edge. Mikael Backlund won it in overtime with TJ Brodie assisting twice for the Flames who received 33 saves from David Rittich.
The Washington Capitals have dropped seven in a row after opening the second half of the season with a 6-3 loss at Toronto. Nicklas Backstrom, Alex Ovechkin and Matt Niskanen scored for the Capitals. TJ Oshie logged a pair of assists and Braden Holtby took the loss for Washington with five goals allowed on 36 shots.
Nazem Kadri was the big gun for the Maple Leafs with a hat trick with Nikita Zaitsev, Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner also lighting the lamp. Morgan Rielly and Connor Brown assisted twice and William Nylander added three helpers for Toronto to make a winner of Frederik Andersen and his 41 saves.
Flames are 4-0 in their last 4 vs. Metropolitan and over is 8-1 in Flames last 9 games following a win and over is 7-1 in Flames last 8 overall. Capitals are 0-5 in their last 5 after allowing 5 goals or more in their previous game and over is 4-0 in Capitals last 4 vs. Pacific and Capitals are 0-5 in their last 5 games following a loss of 3 or more goals. Road team is 7-2 in the last 9 meetings.
Washington has lost seven in a row and Calgary has won 8-9 but might have lost that momentum with the long break. The better odds or walk away in my opinion…
