The Capital One Arena and the Washington Capitals host the Carolina Hurricanes in Thursday NHL action.
The Carolina Hurricanes have went from hot to struggling with the team following a four game win streak with loses in four of five after a 5-4 defeat at the Tampa Bay Lightning on Tuesday. The Carolina offense nearly bailed out the defense with Justin Faulk scoring twice with Brock McGinn, Sebastian Aho also lighting the lamp.
Teuvo Teravainen added a pair of helpers and the Hurricanes received 29 saves from Cam Ward. Tampa Bay saw Tyler Johnson record a hat trick while Victor Hedman and Jake Dotchin also lit the lamp. Brayden Point added three assists and Andrei Vasilevskiy stopped 28 shots to get the win for he Lightning.
The Washington Capitals have emerged from their early season struggles and are now playing like the team we have seen over the last few years. Surging Washington has won five in a row following a 3-1 win versus the visiting Vancouver Canucks on Tuesday night. Vancouver opened the scoring at 8:23 of the first on a Daniel Sedin power play tally.
Washington emerged from the first period with a 2-1 on goals from John Carlson and Lars Eller before Evgeny Kuznetsov found the back of the net in the second period for some insurance. Phillip Grubauer kept Washington hot with a 37 save performance while Jacob Markstrom absorbed the loss with 33 stops.
Hurricanes are 0-4 in their last 4 vs. a team with a winning record and over is 5-1 in Hurricanes last 6 when their opponent allows 2 goals or less in their previous game and under is 4-1-1 in Hurricanes last 6 vs. Metropolitan. Capitals are 4-0 in their last 4 after allowing 2 goals or less in their previous game and under is 6-0 in Capitals last 6 home games vs. a team with a road winning % of less than .400 and over is 7-0 in Capitals last 7 Thursday games. Over is 4-0-1 in the last 5 meetings and Hurricanes are 0-6 in the last 6 meetings in Washington and Hurricanes are 0-4 in the last 4 meetings.
I don’t think I want to face the Capitals right now so I’ll back them pending goalie confirmation…
