The Line: Washington Capitals -250 / Carolina Hurricanes +155 --- Over/Under: 6
The Carolina Hurricanes and Washington Capitals meet Thursday in NHL action at the Capital One Arena.
The Carolina Hurricanes could use a statement road victory after losing five of their last seven games. The Carolina Hurricanes are averaging 2.5 goals per game and are scoring on 15.7 percent of their power play opportunities. Sebastian Aho leads Carolina with 14 goals, Teuvo Teravainen has 21 assists and Justin Williams has 94 shots on goal. Defensively, the Carolina Hurricanes are allowing 2.9 goals per game and are killing 80.6 percent of their opponents power plays. Curtis McElhinney has given up 29 goals on 355 shots faced and Petr Mrazek has allowed 39 goals on 381 shots. The Carolina Hurricanes have allowed three or more goals in seven of their last nine games.
The Washington Capitals look to keep the puck rolling after winning seven of their last eight games. The Washington Capitals are averaging 3.6 goals per game and are scoring on 23.4 percent of their power play opportunities. Alex Ovechkin leads Washington with 29 goals, Nicklas Backstrom has 31 assists and John Carlson has 86 shots on goal. Defensively, the Washington Capitals are allowing 2.9 goals per game and are killing 76.4 percent of their opponents power plays. Pheonix Copley has allowed 30 goals on 340 shots and Braden Holtby has given up 67 goals on 775 shots. The Washington Capitals have allowed three or less goals in seven of their last eight games.
The Hurricanes are 3-7 in their last 10 road games, 0-4 in their last 4 games following a win and 3-8 in their last 11 overall. The Capitals are 11-2 in their last 13 games following a win, 107-48 in their last 155 home games and 50-24 in their last 74 overall. The Hurricanes are 2-6 in the last 8 meetings in Washington and 2-6 in the last 8 meetings. The under is 9-4 in Hurricanes last 13 road games. The under is 13-5 in Hurricanes last 18 overall.
The Washington Capitals are the obvious pick here based on the way they're playing, as they're in one of those stretches they get into every year where you don't step in front of them. The problem is the juice is a little too steep for my taste. The Capitals and Hurricanes met a couple of weeks ago and produced a combined 11 goals. The last 10 meetings between the Hurricanes and Capitals have averaged 6.4 goals per game. The last three meetings have averaged 7.6 goals. I'm taking the over in this contest.
