The Washington Capitals begin their quest for a Cup repeat as they welcome the upstart Carolina Hurricanes to Capital One Arena for their series opener.
The Hurricanes head into DC looking to steal home ice advantage away from the defending Cup champions as the two sides meet up in their Metro division semi-final series opener on Thursday night. Carolina has taken the league by storm this season and could very well create some headaches for some of the league’s powerhouses with a lengthy playoff run and while they may not have the offensive personnel that some of the others in the Metro do they are certainly no slouch. The Hurricanes head into the playoffs on a 4-1 run in their last 5 contests but they have been dreadful on the road against the Capitals as they are 2-8 in their last 10 trips to DC and are just 8-20 in their last 20 show downs with the Caps overall. Petr Mrazek is expected to get the start here as he will face off against Braden Holtby who will get the nod in his team’s playoff opener after earning a spot on the bench a season ago.
The Capitals meanwhile are once again one of the league’s top teams and are the favorite to come out of the Metro bracket with the Isles, Penguins, and of course the Hurricanes to contend with. Washington knows what it takes to go on a deep playoff run and this group is getting overlooked this season thanks to the season that both the Lightning and Bruins have had but they are just as dangerous as ever and will be out to prove their worth in this one. The Caps are 4-0 in their last 4 Conference quarter final games after an opening round sweep last season and are 13-5 in their last 18 games against the Eastern Conference which bodes well for them here as a serviceable favorite against the Canes.
The Hurricanes are 12-5 in their last 17 road games and the road team is 6-2 in the last 8 meetings between these sides while the Caps are 11-3 in their last 14 as a favorite and 10-4 in their last 14 following a blowout loss at home. The price here isn’t great but it could be worse and the Caps start their defense with a bang and earn a victory.
