The Washington Capitals look to continue their recent success at home as they welcome the Chicago Blackhawks to town on Wednesday night.
The Blackhawks look to end a 7 game losing skid in Washington on Wednesday night as the Verizon Center has not been kind to Chicago over the years and to say the Hawks need a boost of energy would be an understatement. Chicago is coming off a tough season in which they failed to make the playoffs and many thought they had turned a corner when they got out of the gates in a hurry this season, but they seem to be back to old form here and could very well be on the outside looking in again this season. Chicago is 1-4 in their last 5 against a team from the Eastern Conference and are 18-38 in their last 56 road games and that is not good news when they face off against a Capitals side on Wednesday that has dismantled teams from the Central division.
The Capitals meanwhile are the defending Cup champions and are playing as such to start the season as they are currently sitting in a playoff spot in the Metro division and are coming off a huge win against the Canadiens. Alexander Ovechkin is 2nd in the NHL in goals but is 28th overall in points while Nick Backstrom is the top scoring Caps forward with 23 total points which is 9 back of the league leader in Mikka Rantanen. The Capitals need to rectify their offensive woes if they’re going to compete for their second straight Stanley Cup and history suggests that it is only a matter of time before things start to fall in their favor.
The Hawks are 7-19 in their last 26 following a win and 2-7 in their last 9 meetings with the Capitals while Washington is 24-10 in their last 34 against the Central and 2-7 in their last 9 following a win. Chicago is in trouble here as the Caps cruise to another victory in a game that finishes in regulation.
