The Washington Capitals look to stay red hot as they welcome the Detroit Red Wings to the Verizon Center on Friday night.
The Red Wings look to get a rare road win against the Washington Capitals on Friday night as Henrik Zetterberg and company head into the US capital to face off against Alex Ovechkin and the high octane Capitals offense in what should be an exciting contest. The Wings started the season strong but have lost seven of their last 10 games and have faltered over the last couple of weeks and are starting to look more like the team many anticipated in the preseason. Detroit has been the model of consistency over the years but they have taken a bit of a hit over the last few seasons in terms of talent and now with Pavel Datsyuk out the door and the skill set just not being there across the board this could be the season they break their playoff streak.
The Capitals meanwhile are looking every bit as dangerous as they have in recent seasons and are one of the odds on favourites to win the Stanley Cup this season as they have a ton of depth up front, on the blue line, and one of the best goalies in the league. Washington is a very tough team to beat at home and with the way their offense can string goals together I think it could be a very rough night for Jimmy Howard who is expected to get the start opposite Braden Holtby in this one as both teams have an off day on Saturday.
The Wings are 8-20 in their last 28 road games and 1-5 in their last six against the East while the Caps are 20-7 in their last 27 in a 3-4 situation and 37-14 in their last 51 against the Atlantic. The Caps are big favourites here but rightfully so as they are rolling right now and it’s going to take more than the Wings to knock them off.
