The New York Rangers and the Washington Capitals meet in NHL action from the Capital One Arena on Sunday afternoon.
The New York Rangers will look to build on a 5-2 win over the New Jersey Devils in their last outing. Jimmy Vesey, Ryan Strome and Chris Kreider staked the Rangers a 3-0 1st period lead in a span of 9:35, carrying that lead through the 2nd and into the 3rd period. New Jersey pulled a goal back before Brady Skjei restored the three-goal lead. New Jersey scored a 2nd goal 1:51 later, but that’s as close as the Devils would get as Strome added an empty-netter for his 2nd goal of the game to seal the deal for the Rangers in the win. Alexander Georgiev got the win to improve to 10-10-0 after stopping 19 of 21 shots faced in the winning effort.
The Washington Capitals will look to rebound after a 5-2 loss to Buffalo last time out. Buffalo jumped out to a 2-0 1st period lead before Alexander Ovechkin got the Caps on the board early in the 2nd. Buffalo restored their two-goal cushion by the end of the 2nd, and Andre Burakovsky would cut the deficit back to 3-2, but that’s as close as the Capitals would get as Buffalo made it 4-2 just 1:27 later and 5-2 with an empty-netter in the final minute of the 3rd to seal Washington’s fate. Braden Holtby took the loss, falling to 21-16-4 after allowing 4 goals on 37 shots faced in the losing effort.
New York is 17-37 in their last 54 road games and 16-37 in their last 53 games against a team with a winning record while the over is 4-1 in their last 5 games as a road underdog. Washington is 1-6 in their last 7 games against the Eastern Conference and 1-4 in their last 5 games playing on no rest while the under is 4-1 in their last 5 games overall. New York is 0-4 in the last 4 meetings between these two teams.
I give the Capitals a slight edge playing at home, with both teams on no rest and having to travel for this game. However, neither side has been that great on the 2nd half of a back-to-back and I’m not getting enough plus money to consider the Rangers in this spot. I’m expecting some tired legs in this matchup, so goals may come a bit easier than we are used to, so I’ll side with the over in this contest.
