The New York Rangers look to snap out of their ugly funk against Eastern Conference foes as they complete the home and home set with the Washington Capitals on Wednesday.
The Rangers have had a dismal season and their pain and suffering continues for another week or so as they play out the string of their final six games before heading to the links as they will not be going to the Eastern Conference playoffs this season. New York came into the year with high expectations and actually have a pretty good roster, but things never fell into place for them and they will be forced to go back to the drawing board in the offseason and it will leave hockey fans with a weird void as the Blue Shirts have been among the league’s most consistent teams in recent years and always seem to be a threat to win the Cup. New York is 1-4 in their last five meetings with their division rivals and are coming off a loss against the Caps on Monday night, but they will aim to play spoiler here and send Washington to just their 10th loss in 38 games at home this season.
The Capitals meanwhile are currently clinging on to top spot in the Metro division but their lead isn’t safe by any stretch as they’re up by five points on the Penguins for first and still have six games to go. Washington is looking like a threat to cruise through the East once again as they have put up another strong regular season, but as we seem to discuss every season they have yet to show us they can win in the playoffs and until that happens it could be another disappointment for Alex Ovechkin and company who would gladly trade all of their individual accolades for a shot at winning the Stanley Cup.
The Rangers are 3-12 in their last 15 against the East and 1-4 in their last five overall while the Caps are 10-2 in their last 12 in the second leg of a home and home and are 4-0 in their last four overall. New York has had a woeful season while the Caps need to keep moving forward and in a game at home they do just that.
