The New York Rangers head to the Verizon Center for game three of their series with the Washington Capitals.
The Washington Capitals came close to a sweep in their first two games in New York but in the end a series tied at a game apiece with the home ice advantage is none too shabby following a 3-2 defeat in game two at MSG on Saturday. The Capitals never led but still kept the pressure on as they cut a 3-1 deficit to 3-2 with almost 9 ½ minutes remaining in regulation but never got the equalizer past Henrik Lundqvist with no miracle last second goal this time around. Evegny Kuznetsov scored in the second and Alex Ovechkin tallied his second of the series while Braden Holtby recorded 32 saves in defeat.
In what was a crucial game number two for the New York Rangers they avoided an 0-2 hole with a tight 3-2 decision against the feisty Capitals Saturday. After losing the opener with under two seconds remaining in regulation the New Yorkers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the opening period which had rout written all over it. However the Capitals defense tightened and a 3-1 lead with Henrik Lundqvist in goal seemed enough to take the wind out of the Caps sails. It was but it wasn’t easy. Dan Boyle and Chris Kreider lit the lamp in the first and Derrick Brassard’s ‘insurance’ goal in the third turned out to be the game winner. Lundqvist was strong between the pipes with a 30 stop effort to pick up the win.
The Capitals are 7-1 in their last 8 when their opponent allows 2 goals or less in their previous game and are 5-1 in their last 6 after scoring 2 goals or less in their previous game while the under is 5-0-4 in Capitals last 9 Conference Semifinals games. The Rangers are 28-6 in their last 34 when their opponent scores 2 goals or less in their previous game while going 6-2 in their last 8 vs. a team with a winning record. The lines are not out but this looks like a dead even series so I lean under for now but please check back…
