The Washington Capitals look to stay red hot as they welcome the struggling Philadelphia Flyers to the Capital One Arena on Tuesday night.
The Flyers head into D.C. looking to pull off the upset as they face off against the Metro division rivals and the defending Stanley Cup champions who are tearing up the NHL right now with a 17-6 stretch in their last 23 games. Philadelphia has already made some personnel changes this season and look as though they are building towards the future as they should be in the mix for a top end draft pick as they don’t look like a team capable of getting to the playoffs this season. The Flyers are a woeful 6-18 in their last 24 games and are winless in their last 4 road games and against a Capitals side who has become one of the league’s best home ice teams it doesn’t look like things will get better anytime soon. Michal Neuvirth is expected to get the nod here as he will face off against Braden Holtby who certainly gives the home side the edge in goal.
The Capitals meanwhile are looking as dangerous as ever and are very much a threat to repeat as Stanley Cup champions as they are loaded in the offensive zone led by veteran sniper Alex Ovechkin. The Capitals are 6-1 in their last 7 games against the Metro division and are 6-2 in their last 8 contests against the Flyers and with the way the Flyers have been playing this season it looks as though the home team will continue those trends and give themselves another tick in the win column. Washington is a staggering 108-49 in their last 157 home games and with the Flyers playing in a back to back here the odds makers are certainly thinking this is going to be a blow out.
The Flyers are winless in their last 4 against the Eastern Conference and 1-4 in their last 5 against the Metro while the Capitals are 39-16 in their last 55 against the East and have hit the under in 7 of their last 9 games. Philly is in big trouble here and against the Caps at home this looks to be a comfortable victory for the defending champions.
