The Washington Capitals and Pittsburgh Penguins meet up in DC on Wednesday night in a show down of two of the league’s best teams.
The defending champions head into the Verizon Center on Wednesday night in a marquee matchup between the two bitter rivals and two focal points of the NHL as Alex Ovechkin and Sidney Crosby renew hostilities once again. The Penguins have been brilliant to start the season and sit in a dead heat with the Capitals for second place in the Metro division and do hold a game in hand so they can separate themselves with a big win here on the road against a Caps team that has a 15-5-1 record when playing in DC. The Penguins meanwhile are a respectable 8-6-3 on the road this season but considering they are 18-2-2 at home it is safe to say they have some room for improvement when playing away from home and a performance here against Ovechkin and company would certainly be a great jumping off point.
The Capitals meanwhile are coming off a huge win on the road against the Montreal Canadiens in which Ovechkin netted his 999th career NHL point and he will be more than motivated to hit the millennial mark against his bitter rival. Washington is a +31 in goal differential this season which has them sitting fourth in that category in the NHL and with the defensive unit coming along led by John Carlson and the explosive offense all playing in front of the reigning Vezina Trophy winner is a nice recipe for success and the Caps should be in the mix for the Eastern Conference crown. Marc-Andre Fleury is expected to get the call in the Pittsburgh crease as he will match up against Braden Holtby.
The Penguins are 4-0 in their last four games following a win and 8-2 in their last 10 Wednesday games while the Caps are 6-0 in their last six overall and 5-0 in their last five following a win. This is going to be a great game and while getting the champs at plus money is a gift I don’t see it happening here as the Caps will look for a big night from Ovechkin and I think they get him his milestone and a big win to boot.
