The St. Louis Blues continue their chase for a wild card spot in the Western Conference as they head into Washington to take on the defending Cup champions on Monday night.
The Blues have started to turn a corner and are looking like a much different team since the turn of the calendar as they have steadily improved their play on the road and are looking to pull off a huge upset on Monday against the Caps. St. Louis started out of the gates at a snail’s pace and it might come back to haunt them as they are sitting 5 points back of the Minnesota Wild for the last playoff spot in the West and their matchup on Monday isn’t exactly one that many teams look forward to. The Blues are 5-1 in their last 6 road games but they have struggled against the Capitals as they are 1-5 in their last 6 matchups with Washington and are 3-10 in their last 13 games following a win. Jake Allen is expected to get the start here as he will face off against Braden Holtby in a matchup that has to favor Washington in the crease.
The Capitals meanwhile remain one of the league’s best teams and have avoided a championship hangover as they are currently sitting in first place in the Metro division with a 27-12-5 record. The Caps are led by Alex Ovechkin who continues to be the game’s ultimate goal scoring threat and so long as he is achieving at a high level this is going to be a team capable of going on another deep playoff run, especially with games like this one against the Blues on home ice on their schedule. The odds makers are expecting a lopsided win in favor of the home team and a high scoring game to boot as the Over has hit in 6 straight matchups between these two teams.
The Blues are 5-0 in their last 5 road games against a team with a winning home record and are 1-4 in their last 5 Monday games while the Caps are 31-10 in their last 41 Monday games and 19-7 in their last 26 games overall. The Blues have been playing better of late but they are overmatched here in a game that should sail over the total.
