The Line: Vancouver Canucks +176 / Washington Capitals -215 -- Over/Under: 6
The Vancouver Canucks and Washington Capitals meet Tuesday in NHL action at the Capital One Arena.
The Vancouver Canucks could use a nice road victory after splitting their last eight games. The Vancouver Canucks are averaging 2.9 goals per game and are scoring on 17.2 percent of their power play opportunities. Elias Pettersson leads Vancouver with 23 goals, Bo Horvat has 24 assists and Nikolay Goldobin has 73 shots on goal. Defensively, the Vancouver Canucks are allowing 3.1 goals per game and are killing 79.5 percent of their opponents power plays. Jacob Markstrom has given up 107 goals on 1,185 shots faced and Thatcher Demko has allowed three goals on 39 shots. The Vancouver Canucks have allowed three or less goals in six of their last seven games.
The Washington Capitals could use a win here after losing eight of their last nine games. The Washington Capitals are averaging 3.3 goals per game and are scoring on 21.4 percent of their power play opportunities. Alex Ovechkin leads Washington with 37 goals, John Carlson has 40 assists and Nicklas Backstrom has 108 shots on goal. Defensively, the Washington Capitals are allowing 3.2 goals per game and are killing 77.9 percent of their opponents power plays. Pheonix Copley has allowed 52 goals on 536 shots and Braden Holtby has given up 106 goals on 1,141 shots. The Washington Capitals have allowed three or more goals in six of their last eight games.
The Canucks are 2-10 in their last 12 games playing on 0 days rest, 1-5 in their last 6 Tuesday games and 30-61 in their last 91 vs. a team with a winning record. The Capitals are 121-59 in their last 180 home games, 1-7 in their last 8 vs. Western Conference and 1-8 in their last 9 overall. The Canucks are 1-4 in the last 5 meetings in Washington and 1-6 in the last 7 meetings. The over is 4-1 in Capitals last 5 overall. The under is 5-1-1 in Canucks last 7 road games.
The Washington Capitals have won seven of the last 10 meetings against the Vancouver Canucks, and one would assume it's only a matter of time before they snap out of this funk. The Canucks also have zero success playing on the end of back to backs and have taken their licks against above-average teams. There's good reason why the Capitals are big favorites, but I'm not going to lay this sort of price with a team that's won just four games since New Years Eve. Instead, I'll take the Canucks and the spread, as it's a happy medium between the two sides.
