The Winnipeg Jets and Washington Capitals meet up in DC on Monday night in a show down of two of the league’s most explosive offensive players.
The Jets look for a pivotal road victory against the Washington Capitals on Monday night as Finnish super sophomore Patrik Laine will look to overtake Alex Ovechkin for the league scoring lead as both players currently have 40 and are certainly capable of eclipsing the 50 mark with a few weeks left in the season. Winnipeg currently sits seven points back of the Nashville Predators for top spot in the Central division but they do have a bit of a buffer the third seed which would give them home ice advantage against either the Minnesota Wild or Dallas Stars but with ample time left in the regular season they still have their sights set on chasing down top spot in the Western Conference. Winnipeg is expected to send Connor Hellebuyck to the crease here as he will face off against Braden Holtby who will be out to send Washington to their 24th home win of the season.
The Capitals currently hold down to spot in the Metro division but there is only two points separating first from third and another three back sits four and five so the race is incredibly wide open and will likely come down to the final day of the regular season to determine who will have home ice advantage. Washington needs to find a way to be more consistent on the road if they’re going to find a way to advance to the Stanley Cup final but luckily for them in this one they are at home and face off against a Jets side that is a woeful 5-21 in their last 26 meetings in Washington but is playing with a ton of confidence.
The Jets are 5-1 in their last six road games and 4-1 in their last five overall while the Caps are 19-7 in their last 26 against the Central and 20-8 in their last 28 Monday games. This is going to be a great game to watch and while I do think the Caps are a tough out at home I think the Jets are the better team and they prove why in this spot.
