The Jets look to play their way out of the Eastern Conference basement as they welcome the Colorado Avalanche to town on Saturday night.
The Avalanche head into Winnipeg looking to hold on to their wild card spot in the Western Conference playoff race and with a win they can move four points clear of the Wild who are hot on their heels. Colorado has turned it up since the all-star break and have gone from an underachieving unit to a team ready to make some noise in the playoffs and with the offensive weapons they possess it would come as no surprise to see them knock off one of the top dogs in the first round. Colorado is 18-15 on the road this season and will likely turn to Semyon Varlamov in this one who will probably be countered by Ondrej Pavelec in the Winnipeg crease.
The Jets meanwhile have gone from a playoff team a season ago to having the worst record in the Western Conference and in the running for a lottery pick in this year’s draft and with Andrew Ladd already out the door we could see the Winnipeg overhaul continue in the off season. Winnipeg does have some nice pieces in place and they did make the playoffs last year for a reason but this season they just haven’t been able to get any consistency in their game and as such they are 27-35-5 and have but 59 points. Winnipeg for some reason is favoured in this spot but I don’t get it as even with Gabriel Landeskog the Avs are the better team and getting them at plus money is a gift.
