The Senators look to shake out of their late season funk as they head into Winnipeg to battle a struggling Jets side on Wednesday night.
The Ottawa Senators head into Wednesday night’s game sitting 10 points back of the Philadelphia Flyers for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference, and while they are technically still alive they are going to have to pull off a miracle in order to qualify and I don’t think they have it in them. Ottawa has had some late season magic before and they are going with Andrew Hammond tonight who was the catalyst in their run to the playoffs last season but I don’t think there is enough time left for them to catch up and with a 3-6-1 mark in their last 10 contests they certainly aren’t playing like a team worthy of competing for the Stanley Cup this season. Hammond is likely to face off with Ondrej Pavelec for a Jets side that has also struggled this season and one that has officially been eliminated from playoff contention.
The Jets head into this game sitting in third to last in the Western Conference and are just two points away from the basement and with just six games left on their schedule and a long offseason on the horizon it can’t be easy to get up for these games, even at home. Luckily for Winnipeg here they welcome a Senators side that has been dismal on the road this season and should stand a great chance at getting a victory but Winnipeg’s home play this year has been a cause for concern as over the years they have covered up their poor road play with stellar efforts at the MTS Centre. This should be a decent game even though both teams are likely on the outs for playoff competition and while Winnipeg should be the favourite being at home I like the Sens here as they are the better team and do technically still have a shot at extending their season.
