The Jets look to extend their lead in the Western Conference wild card race with a victory on home ice against the Ottawa Senators.
The Sens had been playing some of the league's best hockey over the last week or so and while they didn't get the victory last night they still earned a single point and forced the Wild to a shootout in Minnesota. Ottawa had been left for dead around Christmas and were given not shot at making the playoffs but a recent surge has them within striking distance and while it is a longshot they get in they are just six back of the Bruins who haven't exactly been world beaters this season. Ottawa will go back with Craig Anderson here as Andrew Hammond gets a break and the Jets will lean on Mike Hutchinson who will look to net his team another two points.
The Jets have a firm grip on a wild card position and at this rate are likely to at least secure a spot in the Western Conference playoffs but with under 20 games to go in the regular season Winnipeg has their sights set on moving up in the Central and avoiding a first round show down with a division winner. Winnipeg has been a fun team to watch this season and do have the makeup of a playoff contender and while I expected they would add a goaltending piece at the trade deadline it looks as though they are confident moving forward with rookie Mike Hutchinson and who are we to question them? Anderson is the more experienced of the two but with the Jets at home here and catching the Sens in a back to back I think they are the play.
