The Tampa Bay Lightning and the Winnipeg Jets meet in NHL action from the Bell MTS Place on Sunday night.
The Tampa Bay Lightning will be looking for another win to add to their current 8-game winning streak after a 4-1 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs in their last outing. Toronto opened the scoring, but their lead lasted all of 2:54 before Anthony Cirelli tied the game at 1-1 for the Bolts heading into the 2nd period. Nikita Kucherov, Alex Killorn and Tyler Johnson would all score in the 2nd frame, with Johnson scoring with less than :02 remaining in the period, to give Tampa Bay an eventually insurmountable 4-1 advantage after 40 minutes of play, a lead that the Lightning would ride out until the final buzzer. Andrei Vasilevskiy got the win in his return, stopping a career-high 48 shots, including a possible save of the year candidate, in picking up the win to improve to 10-3-1 this season.
The Winnipeg Jets will look to add to their current 4-game win streak after a 4-3 overtime win over the Chicago Blackhawks in their last outing. Mark Scheifele opened the scoring for the Jets, but the lead would evaporate by the end of the period, heading into the 2nd frame with a 1-1 tie. Chicago took the lead before Patrik Laine equalized and Mathieu Perreault helped the ‘Peg retake the lead heading into the final 20 minutes. Winnipeg almost sealed the deal but Chicago would score with :08 left to send the game to overtime where Scheifele buried his 2nd of the night in the first minute of extra time to give Winnipeg the W. Laurent Brossoit got the win to improve to 7-1-1 this season after stopping 34 of 37 shots faced in the winning effort.
Tampa Bay is 47-23 in their last 70 road games and 38-15 in their last 53 games overall while the under is 11-4-3 in their last 18 games against a team with a winning record. Winnipeg is 55-19 in their last 74 home games and 41-20 in their last 61 games overall while the over is 7-2 in their last 9 games following a win. Tampa Bay is 21-10 in the last 31 meetings between these two teams and 4-1 in the last 5 meetings between these two teams in Winnipeg.
I said to myself before the line was released that I’d probably end up going to the side that has the value as you can’t really go wrong picking a side here, meaning this is a game that’s probably better to watch than bet. However, while the Jets are a solid team at home, Winnipeg has had to grind out a couple of wins in overtime against Edmonton and Chicago in their last outing. Tampa Bay on the other hand is taking down top teams with ease like they did against Toronto in their last outing. We are getting the better odds with the team on the longer winning streak that’s had the bulk of the success in this matchup, both overall and in Winnipeg, so I’ll side with Tampa Bay to extend their winning streak here.
