Uruguay and England will square off Thursday afternoon in the World Cup, pretty much crushing any dreams of the loser advancing to the next round.

One of the shockers in the tournament so far was Uruguay losing to Costa Rica, 3-1. For whatever reason Uruguay played with little to no energy and was horrible defensively. That’s entirely too many goals for an underdog Costa Rica team to score on a much more talented Uruguay. Now, this loss will either light a fire under Uruguay and inspire a brilliant performance, or it will crush them and lead to an early exit in the World Cup. Luis Suarez expects a much better showing, as he said that Uruguay has the guys in place to take advantage of England’s defense. They could certainly use a big performance from the Liverpool player.

England’s loss was a little easier to swallow, as it lost, 2-1, to a much more talented Italy club. While a loss is never a god thing in an elimination tournament, there were many things England can feel good about heading into this match. England’s defense did a good job against an explosive Italian team and Wayne Rooney had several opportunities to put the ball in the net. He scored England’s lone goal and just missed a few other shots to possibly tie the match. England’s captain, Steven Gerrard, thinks that his team can control the pace against Uruguay and really make life difficult.

In a do or die match, it’s usually wise to go with the better team, but at this point I’m not sure which team that is in this spot. I’m really concerned about Uruguay and if they can shake that loss, especially if they get off to a slow start in this matchup. They may just pack it in.

Rooney proved he can get just about any shot he wants, so I’m going to go with England and the most explosive player for the plus money.
